Jimmy Carter

Jimmy Carter

Yard, 1998 - 2018, 2022 - present

Jimmy has been working at Hartge for over 25 years. He works on hauling boats and is one of the first to work with the boat during the service process.  He is also our expert when it comes to polishing and waxing.  After Jimmy’s detailed and meticulous work is complete, the surfaces of any boat in his care look like glass.

His friendly and hard-working nature make him an excellent employee and asset to the yard team.  Jimmy is a native of Shady Side and attended school at Wiley H. Bates High School.

Robert Kidd

Yard, Travel Lift Operator - 2022 - present

Robert is part of the well-known Kidd family of Southern Maryland.  Fifty-six years ago, he began his career as a boating mechanic at West River Marina. After working there for over 20 years he moved on to various jobs before coming to work for Hartge Yacht Yard.

Robert‘s extensive mechanical knowledge of cars and boats has been truly valuable in all positions he has held. He grew up racing outboard boats and has a unique vehicle housed in his garage known as “2 Faced” (a truck with two front ends).

Robert is well known for helping others both in the Yard and outside of work.  His spare time is spent with his son, daughter-in-law, and 2 granddaughters - the “loves of his life”.

Kelsey Averill

Forklift & Travel Lift Operator, 2010 - present

Kelsey, a south county native, is a natural outdoorsman: hunter, gatherer, angler, and a terrific sailor. As a teen, Kelsey was a sailing instructor at West River Sailing Club and his only means of transportation was sailing his laser to and from Shady Side. From those days on a Laser, he has become a talented skipper and crew on a number of high-performance sailboats. His favorite boat to race is the International 505.

Prior to working at HYY, Kelsey worked for a marine salvage business, a seafood retailer, and in construction. When Kelsey came to Hartge's, he had the privilege to work under Nick Schlegel and learn from a master. With Nicky’s passing, Kelsey has taken over controls as the main Travel Lift operator.

Dave Voss

Dave graduated in 2014 from The Landing School located in Maine. While in training, he focused on carpentry and learned to build small wooden boats.

Dave came to Hartge’s as an apprentice under the master carpenters of HYY, Peter and Ernie. While he continues to learn from their extensive knowledge, Dave has branched out to help in other divisions of the boatyard.

Taciturn and diligence best describe Dave. His general boat knowledge and prior work experience at PYY Marine makes him a welcome asset to the crew.
